Mastery towards something is the polishing of who you are. I remember the scene of “The Last Samurai” as Tom Cruise speaks about the Japanese people waking up each day and devoting their lives to the perfection of each one’s art, skill, or trade. That scene always struck a cord with me.
There’s a subtle difference, quite imperceptible at times, between devoting yourself to something — which is to say, working towards mastery — and going through the motions of doing something over and over and over again without any marked improvement, sense of reward, and true fulfillment.
Perhaps it’s all too easy to fall into a certain way of living to the point of it becoming normal and best, fleetingly pleasurable at times. But as a constant succession of sparks lends but a bit of light, it’ll never become a burning, open flame. And a devotion and mastery towards something is that little bit of wind that ignites those sparks into an everlasting flame.
The things we do should bring us real joy and reward. Joseph Campbell said to “follow your bliss.” And I think it’s only when we follow our bliss, that things really start to happen in our lives. When we actually start to live. When we get on track of the things we are devoted to, with all our heart, then the right people start coming into our lives; the right books we start to read; the right places we visit; and the right advancements we start to make in our lives. This is the flame.
To devote yourself and watching yourself unfold more and more into the master that you are, is perhaps the most fulfilling thing that one could ever experience. This is the polishing of your infinitely brilliant self that has been sullied with the demands of the society of which you may have surrendered your passions to. Get back to that luster within you. And shine shine shine.
