What’s So Bad about Being Misunderstood?

ghandi sittingBeing misunderstood has become quite normal for me over the years, perhaps even as a child playing with insects and birds as most of the children spent hours in front of the television with video games. Later on, being misunderstood by becoming a vegan. Being misunderstood by not working a 9 to 5 and choosing to start a business. Being misunderstood by “sitting on my ass,” seemingly doing nothing, as I meditated in silence. Or as I climbed to the top of a redwood tree to prevent it from being chopped down. Being misunderstood by speaking of the God within each and every person, instead of an old white man that lives outside us in the sky.

So, simply being myself — who I am — I am misunderstood.

And I can imagine how many of you out there reading this, are also misunderstood by just being who you are. By just expressing your passions. By having the courage to follow your heart, even if that means falling out of line with the herd society.

And I have one word to say to you — for all of you out there who are being yourself as society’s line of fire condemns you with their volley of “you’re crazy’s” and “what the hell are you talking about’s” and “can’t you just be normal’s”… — Bravo.

Please, continue to shine your light on the world. Continue to share yourself in a world that does not understand you. For it is you, your life, that is leading the world to a higher dimension. You being you.

I’ll end with the words Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall. Speak what you think now in hard words and tomorrow speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict everything you said today — ‘Ah, so you shall be misunderstood.’—Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood…”

Blessings,
Dave

About David Askaripour

I've been thinking about life, existence, and truth for as long as I could remember. When I was about 7 I remember getting a headache trying to figure out who created God...and if someone created him, then who create him? I love investigating and testing, taking nothing for truth that outside my direct experience. At the age of 12, I started my own candy selling business; it grew so large that the principal ended up closing me down (but that was just the beginning...) Through my videos and articles, I share my journey with the world.
