With the exception of the few, narrow-focus resources I have listed in previous Tuesday Tools columns, I generally disapprove of “small business start-up guides”. Most are too broad, too generalized, too soft to be of any use at all.
While I am not revising my position, I am willing to direct anyone who happens to disagree with me, or who has not yet formed an opinion of these multitudinous “guides” to http://www.uschamber.com/sb/default — especially the “learning” section at http://www.uschamber.com/sb/learn/sbtoolkit.htm and the focused articles under the toolkits header.
Like most guides of its ilk, I find the generalizations a little hard to turn into specifics, but, unlike most of the general guides I have seen, the US Chamber of Commerce’s website offers more advanced, real-world guides like “Avoiding Day-to-Day Liability Risks” which build effectively upon the earlier guides.
The US Chamber of Commerce is a distant and nebulous organization from the perspective of most small businesses. On the other hand, if you had not taken the time to consider the USCoC, follow their main-page links and check them out. It may be that they have something to offer your business.
