Set Goals and Stick to Them

So many times throughout your life I’m sure you have constantly heard individuals say to set goals for your future, rather it was your parents, mentors, or teachers in school. As redundant and basic as goal setting may seem, it truly can be the difference between mediocrity and greatness, or even worse failure and success. This concept is especially relevant for young entrepreneurs in today’s highly competitive marketplace.

When you create your own business there is no longer anyone looking over your shoulder egging you on. It’s time that you create a clear idea where you want to go and how you plan to get there. Think of it this way, it’s fairly pointless to just get in a vehicle and ride around town all day without having a true destination, ultimately you will waste time, energy, money, and other resources like gasoline and oil.

This is what happens when you decide to create a business without having any goals that you are striving towards. You will go around in circles with no direction and just like the example I stated earlier you will waste money, energy, time and other valuable resources.

When you set out to create goals you need to focus on the short-term as well as the long-term. So you will want to create a set of goals that you want to reach within six months, then another that you want to accomplish in 1-2 years. These will typically account for your short-term goals. After having a clear idea of your short-term goals then you can focus on your long-term goals that usually span 3-5 years or more.

Remember when setting goals be realistic, but at the same time you want to challenge yourself. So basically don’t set a goal that you’re going to make a million dollars in your first week of entrepreneurship, but you also don’t want to set a pointless goal like, “I plan to make $50 over the course of two years.” The point of goals is to set a focal point, to challenge yourself, and also to reassure and inspire your actions towards your goals.

After you have your goals written out make copies and place them in places where you can constantly be reminded of them. Put them on the wall over your bed, put them in your backpack and briefcases, put them in your vehicle, or you can even tape them over your computer. The idea is to constantly reinforce your destiny in your mind.

When you go to sleep and when you wake up in the morning, read your goals out loud to yourself with confidence knowing that you will succeed! Remember don’t write your goals and forget about them, everyday do some sort of action that is productive and conducive to your goal achievement.

    It is also essential to get idea of goals properly. As Steve Pavlina put it, the point in goal setting is that goals give a certain quality for the present moment. Many people think the goal of the goals is simply to be achieved and they get disappointed when they finally reach their destination and it’s suddenly not that important anymore as it was when they started out. The point of goals is to help you focus and provide you with enthusiasm in the present.
