Meditation is the Scariest Thing in the World

monk_in_zazen That sounds kinda weird, doesn’t it? Why would meditation — something that is meant to be relaxing, soothing, and refreshing — be scary? Well, if meditation hasn’t caused you pain, scared you, and made your life difficult in some way, then you probably aren’t meditating properly or with the right intentions. I say this, because true meditation pushes you to confront yourself for the first time in your life. Your fears, obsessions, imperfections, and hardships.

And therein lies the the scariness of meditation. It’s not the sort of fear that makes you run away when you see a ghost, but the sort that makes you want to keep on pretending about something instead of facing and dealing with it head-on. It’s the sort of fear that inclines you to stay blissfully ignorant instead of becoming shockingly aware of the truth. It’s a subtle yet immensely powerful fear. And this is often the most dreaded and dangerous sort of fear, because it picks away at you — it eats you alive bit by bit. Slowly drives you mad and depressed.

Meditation brings you through the darkest of the darkest tunnels — straight through any issues that you are dealing with in your life — and brings you into existence with your true Self. It’s sort of like a cleansing practice, but one of the mind. This is exactly why it’s scary — because people don’t want to face themselves. They don’t want to deal with reality. They don’t want to clean off that which brings them the most pain and fear in their lives.

But, when one musters up the courage to do so… yes, when this happens, one begins a journey to go through the fear. Because it’s scary finding out who you are. It’s like meeting your mother for the first time after 50 years — your heart is racing and you’re scared out of your mind. But just as all rivers return to the sea, you must return to the Source. And it’ll be the hardest thing you’ve ever attempted to do in your life. The road is “narrow and as sharp as a razors edge.” But only through meditation can you find yourself. It’s scary, I know. But proper meditation is the only way. And I’m not one to speak in absolute terms about anything, but as far as experience has shown me, meditation is absolutely crucial to find your true Self. Without it, one will remain forever lost.

Here are a few meditational practices that I use on a daily basis that have helped steer me through the fear and deeper into my true Self.

  • Daily Seated Meditation: Each day I sit down in a quiet place and meditate for about 20 minutes. I let go of all thinking and just half-close my eyes and allow each thought to effortlessly pass through my mind while I gently try to keep my focus on my breath. I do this upon waking and it sets the tone for the rest of my day. It creates the necessary space from which all productive work and creativity flow out from during the course of the day. But it doesn’t stop there.
  • Meditation in Every Action: As my day unfolds, I make a continuous effort to hold onto the peace and calm of my morning seated meditation in every action and thought. I remember that “in every action, there should be calmness. And in every inaction, there should be action.” Which means that even though I’m doing a lot of activities throughout my day — reading, writing, speaking on youtube, etc.. — I should not forget about the calm, composure, and emptiness that I manifested from within, during my morning meditation. So essentially, I am meditating in everything that I do.
  • Remaining Humble: To constantly bow to the Most High in every action that I take and remember that the work that I’m doing is only because some higher force has allowed me to do so. Remaining humble is to remain hollow in every thought and action, allowing the divine forces to constantly flow through me. For the second I stop thanking and loving and appreciating the Most High, I’m in Hell. I’m in trouble. And I’ve lost all roots to my Source of life, creativity, and power. Everything that I do, I do for the Most High. And if I let the “I,” the “Me,” and the ego interfere with that, I have lost sight of the truth. That’s when I hit a dead end. And this happens from time to time, and when it does, I thank Him for allowing me to hit this dead end… Because it’s the only way that I know when I’ve gotten off track. Never trust a man that isn’t humble — especially not yourself — because he’s the furthest from the truth as anyone could be.

Just as one goes through all sorts of pain, fear, and discomfort when fasting or visiting a new country or having to get up on stage and speak in front of many people, one also goes down a dark and scary road when meditating. But, always, as one proceeds down this path, he’ll always end up within the Light.

I've been thinking about life, existence, and truth for as long as I could remember. When I was about 7 I remember getting a headache trying to figure out who created God...and if someone created him, then who create him? I love investigating and testing, taking nothing for truth that outside my direct experience. At the age of 12, I started my own candy selling business; it grew so large that the principal ended up closing me down (but that was just the beginning...) Through my videos and articles, I share my journey with the world.
