It’s time to stop drinking bottled water, NOW!

Bottled vs. Tap water
I do not drink bottled water, I have never drunk bottled water, in fact, I despise bottled water. That’s spelled D-E-S-P-I-S-E, by the way, just so you know.

All these hip-hop environmental wanna-bees you see on TV or personal appearances, will ultimately be running around trying to do this good and wonderful stuff for the planet, and they’ll be doing it by drinking bottle water! What sense does this make? NONE!

Why? Two things that get my goat. One is the fact that the big perception about bottled water is that it is healthier for you than tap water. Do you know who created that myth? The bottled water people! Bottled water is not in any way shape or form healthier for you than tap water, multiple government and independent studies prove this. And for those of you who are going to say, “but some of it is fortified with nutrients…” GIVE ME A BREAK! Take a multi vitamin with tap water and you are good to go.

If you don’t believe me, Google up tap water vs bottled water, then get prepared to live in denial, because virtually no where will you find that bottled is better than tap. It’s not better for you, it’s NOT!

Secondly, did you know that a lot of makers of bottled water are also soda makers? Dasani is one of them, and guess what, Coke, who owns Dasani, admits it is nothing more than tap water, and virtually the same water they use for their soft drink products.

You are paying the same price for a Coke product but without the flavoring inside! Are we getting a clue yet?

The last fact doesn’t so much get my goat as it makes me sick. 70% of all those little plastic water bottles end up in the trash. That’s right, they can all be recycled, and should be deposited in a plastic recycling bin, but only 30% make it there. That means our landfills are becoming clogged with stupid little plastic bottles because, A-people drink bottled water and B-they throw them away instead of recycling them! That truly makes me ill.

Ok, for all of you out there that have open minds and are thinking, ‘Hey, the Green Guy really makes sense about this’ here is what you do. You get yourself either a permanent plastic bottle—I have a Nalgene, by the way and have been using it for years-or a good aluminum bottle, two if you’d like. Then, if you really don’t want to believe that tap water is just as good, get yourself an inexpensive water filter system that attaches right to your tap.

All of these purifiers can be turned on to purify, or turned off for doing dishes or anything else in the sink. Each filter will come with a disposable cartridge, about 10 bucks each, and if you just use the filter for your drinking water, that cartridge will last months and months. How much money will you save by doing this, as well as plastic bottles that won’t end up in landfills?

If you are serious about the environment and what you can do to help, this is one of the easiest and absolutely cost effective ways. And because you reading this on Mind Petals, then you are already one step ahead of the crowd. So, take the next step, get rid of drinking bottled water. Your pocketbook and your planet will thank you.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about everything except for the taste. Although we do use the inexpensive water filter system that attaches to your tap, it doesn’t taste as good as bottled water.

I still drink it for all the reasons you mentioned, but I know a lot of people who can taste the difference and hate it.

    Just sayin.

Thanks for the comment, Nate. Yer right, water that is purified is pretty tasteless, which is why I drink mine straight from the tap. But, there are ways to add flavor to either tap or purified water, by getting some powdered flavoring, either sugared or nutra sweet for zero calories. That said, I don’t want to open up a bees hive here about how bad sugar and/or aspartame are for some people, I am just throwing out options is all.

But I appreciate the comment, and all comments are welcome.

Buying bottled water is trashy (in multiple senses of the word).

It’s much better to use a BPA-free refillable water bottle, especially one that carries a message designed to get others to think twice about their bottled water habit.

Check out a review of such a Tappening bottle (plus around 140 more eco-friendly product reviews at 1GreenProduct.com).

I agree, Aaron, or an aluminum bottle, or a steel canteen, or a bota.

I am personally on the fence about BPA chems, since some studies are for and some against. Most are targeted towards baby bottles as well, and the possible health effects incurred by toddlers, but I am long past being a baby, so I’ll stick with my Nalgene.

But your point is well taken, and I appreciate the comment.

We do not serve others who live in underdeveloped countries and suffer grotesquely from polluted water supplies and scarcity of water when we PURCHASE water. Are only we -the rich – entitled to water? While poor people bathe and brush their teeth with bottles of flat Coca Cola because they have easier access to that then clean water – is it right to allow private ownership of water sources? Is it not better to promote local governmental management of each country’s water supply and demand sustainable water management?

In truth we would be protecting water for all inhabitants of the planet by demanding safe filtered water, drinkable and “order-able” tap water everywhere while shunning the purchase of bottled water.

Otherwise, what’s next? Selling clean and flavored air in small designer oxygen tanks to those who can afford it?

    Hi
I think they should stop bottle water as tab water is better for you.

That’s an assumption that is contradicted by the 1000′s who can no longer drink tap water due to the illness it causes.
I used to filter tap water and it doesn’t take out enough of what makes me sick, now I have to use bottled water and can not be exposed to the evaporation fumes from any tap water at all.
Tap water is full of toxins, including carcinogens like chlorine and the deadly trihalomethenes. The water companies who are poisoning the masses obviously want us to keep drinking their filth and produce disinfo to say bottled water isn’t safe. Well I’d rather drink from a dirty puddle in the street than take any more of their chemical sludge and if anything needs banning it’s tap water.
