Why Do People Buy?

In this day and age of ‘intelligent consumers’ we often try and complicate our marketing pitch but sometimes simple is better.

A good friend of mine is the sort of consumer every business dreams of. If you write it he’ll believe it. And he’s not the only one. We are all in one way or another looking for our miracle. A product that will make our lives easier, allow us to reach our goals quicker and turn our mundane living into an exotic playground.

Sometimes just being able to tap into that hope is enough.

Now don’t get me wrong you can’t promise the world and not deliver. All you’ll get then is an inbox of angry customers and a mail box full of returned merchandise. You can however, cater your message to those that want to hear it.

If you want true success, aim to make someone’s life easier.

If you want to sell educational merchandise – pitch it as ‘reaching a goal quicker’.

If you want to sell beauty products – use the quest for eternal youth.

If you want to sell fashion – sell image.

If you want to sell health – up the price and sell simple products repackaged for a busy world.

The list is endless but the quest is the same. Pitch your product on the achievable hopes of your consumers. People don’t spend $400 on a pair of jeans they pay $400 for an image. Busy men and women don’t pay an extra $4 a pound for broccoli they pay $4 in the quest for a longer, healthier life.

Tap into what your market is looking for and they will come looking for you.
