Surveys are long and boring. Let’s face it when faced with doing a survey and cleaning the bathroom, most of us would choose a dreaded household chore. So what is a good way to get your customers to complete the all important survey and more importantly, do we need one at all?

Surveys when created intelligently can acquire useful information that is indispensable to your growing business. So the answer is yes, we do need surveys in one form or another.

Surveys collate information that can make your communications more effective. For example, asking what time during of day your customers are most likely to browse the internet can allow you to cater your online content to the correct demographic, ensuring more return visitors and less deleted newsletters.

Timing is crucial in effectively getting your message to your audience. Finding out the best time to approach your customers, can be achieved through a survey.

There are many companies that charge to complete such a service but at the start of your company, I believe there are better ways to spend your money. But how do you, with a million things on your ‘to do’ list get people to take the survey?

  1. The fact is, unless you can offer your customers something in return for their time, very few are going to volunteer for the survey filling task. A competition is a good way to get people’s attention. Offer a prize in return for information.
  2. Keep your surveys short and phrase your questions carefully. You want to elicit as much information as possible.
  3. Make the majority of your questions multiple choice; more than four written answers is asking too much.
  4. Don’t be fooled into thinking your survey has to be fifty questions long. Some of the most effective surveys are the little boxes often used on the front page of most websites. They are made to look ‘fun’, like a game, and simply has one question per day related to the topic. The browser simply clicks on their answer and enters it.
  5. This type of survey may not give you everything you need (profession/age/interests) but it will give you information.

A one question survey collected daily is better than a fifty question survey completed by your Mom yearly.
