What is Marketing?

According to our helpful friends at Wikipedia: Marketing is a social and managerial function associated with the process of researching, developing, promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service.

Now if you click on the managerial function you will be led to another page that states that manager/management comes from the Latin phrase manu agere “to lead by the hand”. Basically ladies and gentlemen it means you have to stand up and take a hands on role (no pun intended) in the marketing of your product.

Of course, delegate, outsource, and hire but overall it is you who reap the benefits or die trying.

MadonnaMadonna for one, is one of the greatest marketers on this planet. The woman is in her forties wearing lycra tights and dancing up a disco storm, reinventing herself time and time again to outlast every other female pop performer.

Now, if you look closely at her background you will see that yes, she has had some help along the way but the driving force undoubtedly is her.

She draws the line, she suggests the angle, she surrounds herself with others that can contribute to her vision, adding their own brilliance without second guessing her decisions because ultimately it will be her that takes the fall if it fails.

If there is one thing that entrepreneurs must do, it’s to take a hands on role in the marketing of their products and services.
