Partner Up

In today’s music world where labels are run by accountants, MP3s have replaced CD’s and live music venues disappear like the Dodo bird, it gets harder and harder for artists to reach mainstream audiences, let alone make a buck. As the music business goes through a significant overhaul, performers are having to be more market savvy to elicit results. Cari Cole is one performer who saw an opportunity and grabbed it by the proverbials.

Inspired by the world-wide best selling book, The Four Agreements she sat down and wrote the soundtrack. I guess you can say, well a lot of people have similar ideas. You’re right, but who acts on it? She did. She jumped on a plane, met the author and soon struck up a deal with his publishing company to produce and distribute the CD. The CD is available alongside the book and is a great example of an innovative musical, marketing coup.

Whether you are a musician, entrepreneur or business owner, partnering up with an established company can give you the exposure you need. It may be just a stepping stone to what you’re really trying to achieve but it will get your foot in the door.

For Cari, it’s meant her CD is available in over thirty countries, distribution avenues that would have taken too much time, energy and funds to develop had she’d been doing it on her own. The book The Four Agreements already had a viable market; she delivered a product that catered to it. By doing this, she introduced a responsive and lucrative audience to her music which in turn created a market for her next project. So when it comes to partners, don’t be commitment phobic. A good business marriage can spawn lots of lovely profitable children.

I think that this is a great story. I think as the business world gets more competitive that we have to become more creative and flexible in order to make viable progress and to extend the reach of our brands.
